Our Editorial Process
How every article is planned, sourced, reviewed, published, and revised — with dates, dissent, and corrections.
The stages
- Topic selection. We prioritize topics based on reader questions, gaps in existing patient-facing content, and shifts in consensus guidance. We do not select topics based on advertiser interests.
- Source review. Every article begins with a review of current guidance from major dental organizations, systematic reviews (particularly Cochrane), and recent peer-reviewed literature. Where sources disagree, we track the disagreement rather than picking a side to simplify the narrative.
- Draft. Drafts are written in plain language, with technical terms explained on first use and a running set of citations kept in an internal document.
- Internal review. A second editor reviews for accuracy against sources, clarity, and consistency with our style guide.
- Publication. Articles include a published date and, later, an updated date reflecting the most recent substantive review.
- Periodic review. Foundational guides are reviewed at least every 12 months. Articles are reviewed sooner if reader corrections or new consensus guidance warrant it.
Corrections policy
Errors are inevitable in any long-running publication. When we find one — or when a reader points one out — we correct the article, add an "Updated" note to the byline area, and, for substantive changes, describe what was changed and why.
Report a correction by emailing contact@gumdiseasecareguide.com with the article URL, the specific claim, and the source that supports the correction.
Separation of editorial and advertising
When advertising or clearly disclosed affiliate content appears on the site, it does not influence which topics are covered, how they are covered, or which sources are used. See our Editorial Policy for the full statement.
Sources we rely on
- American Dental Association (ADA) guidance documents.
- American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) classification and treatment guidelines.
- CDC oral health surveillance data.
- Cochrane systematic reviews.
- Peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Periodontology, Journal of Clinical Periodontology, and the Journal of the American Dental Association.
